Quick Pizza Dough Recipe

pizza dough, easy pizza dough, quick pizza dough recipe, raw dough

This quick pizza dough recipe can be completed from start to finish in about 7-10 minutes (depending on how nimble you are at kneading). It's an easy pizza dough base that is great for those last-minute-dinner kind of nights. And it's really good, so that makes it even greater! Make it with your choice of white or whole wheat flour.

Makes 1 medium pizza dough.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp oil of your choice (vegetable or canola is fine)

Ok, first fill a measuring cup with 1 cup warm water. Pour the yeast into the water and mix thoroughly with a fork until it is completely dissolved.

In a medium sized bowl, combine the 2 1/2 cups of flour with the salt, sugar and oil. Reserve 1/4 cup of the flour for after you have added the water.

Pour the yeasty (yeah, I know that's not a word) water over the flour and begin to mix briskly with a fork or spoon. It should start to come together pretty quickly and get pretty gooey. This is the point when you may decide to forgo the utensil and get your hands dirty.

When all of the flour is mixed in you might notice that your dough is still pretty sticky. Add a little bit of the extra flour a small handful at a time until it is no longer sticking too terribly to your hands. Then form a ball and let the dough rest for 5 minutes.

That's right. 5 minutes. (Sometimes I cheat and start shaping it at 4 minutes but trust me you wanna wait the whole 5 minutes).

While you've got all this time on your hands, you can prepare your pizza pan by greasing it liberally with cooking spray, oil or butter.

When the time is up, coat your hands in flour and plop it on the pan. Firmly start pushing down on the dough, kneading it to the desired thickness. To make a perfect circle I like to rotate my pan as I'm pushing the dough down and out.

And as Porky Pig might say - th-th-tha-tha-that's all folks!

Top this quick pizza dough recipe with your desired toppings, cheese and bake at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes. Then pat yourself on the back and toss out that pizzeria menu taped to your fridge - you're playing with the pros now!

    Easy Pizza Dough Recipe

Making this easy pizza dough recipe can seem like a daunting task. I won't pretend that it always comes out right the first time, but practice makes perfect! So roll up your sleeves and get ready for some fun. The best part is, after all the work you get to eat the result!

    Makes 1 large pizza dough

    Serves 4 - 6

    Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 tbsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • pinch of sugar
  • 3 - 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Warm a medium mixing bowl by running it under hot water upside down. Place the yeast in the bowl and pour the warm water over it. Stir in the sugar, mixing with a fork and let stand until the yeast is dissolved and begins to foam (about 5-10 minutes).

Using a wooden spoon, mix in the salt and about one-third of the flour. Once combined, mix in another third of the flour, stirring until the dough forms a mass and starts to pull away from the bowl.

Sprinkle some of the remaining flour onto your work surface. Take the dough and begin to kneed it, adding the rest of the flour a little bit at a time. You will have to knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes. The dough should become elastic and smooth. Shape into a ball.

Lightly oil another mixing bowl. Put your dough into the bowl. Dampen and wring out a dish towel. Then stretch the moistened towl over the top of the bowl.

Leave the bowl to stand in a warm place until the pizza dough has doubled in volume. (My grandmother used to wrap the entire ensemble in a blanket - this might work for you!) Usually it takes around 40-50+ minutes. To test if the dough has risen enough, poke it with two fingers. If you leave indentations, it is ready! Punch the dough with your fist to release any air. Knead it for an additional 1-2 minutes.

Divide into how many pizzas you wish to make. (Two medium balls makes two medium, four small balls makes four individual) Or leave as one large ball to make one large pizza.

Lightly oil or spray the pan you intend to use for your pizza. You may initially roll the ball out on a flat surface with a rolling pin, or just press the dough out onto your pan, spinning it as you push down to get an even thickness.

Leave the edges of your dough a little bit thicker, to create a nice crust when it is through cooking. Now you are ready to add the toppings to your delicious pizza!

    Potato Pizza

Potato pizza may sound strange to the average American ear, but to me it sounds like my two favorite things combined! Yes, it is pretty much the starchiest thing you could possibly create (and forget it if you are on a low-carb diet!) but it will be delicious, no doubt about it! So dine like the Italians and throw some spuds on your pie!

    Makes 1 large pizza

    Ingredients

  • 1 recipe pizza dough (frozen is fine, too!)
  • 2 large potatoes (any variety), peeled and sliced thin
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella or provolone cheese
  • 2 tbsp grated parmesan
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • 2 tsp dry oregano
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • oil for frying

First of all, if you are using a frozen dough make sure it is thawed and at room temperature before you try to work with it (otherwise you'll have all kinds of trouble stretching it!)

Prepare the dough by spraying a large pizza pan with nonstick spray (or try Cuisinart Chef's Classic Nonstick Bakeware 14-Inch Pizza Pan), and spreading it over the surface to about a 1/2 inch thickness. (Here's a tip: coat your hands and the dough with a sprinkling of plain white flour and your task will become so much easier!)

    potatoes

After you've stretched out your dough, heat a skillet with some olive oil and lay the potatoes into it. Let them cook until they are just tender (you can tell this by how transparent the spuds get... if they are still white, they're not done yet) You can sprinkle some salt and pepper on them (and any other spices you might like) while they are still cooking.

Turn off the heat, and let them cool slightly before you begin the next phase. Sprinkle the olive oil over the pizza dough, then add a little salt, a little pepper and the oregano. You might also want to add a little bit of garlic powder for flavor since this pizza is the kind with no tomato sauce.

Then comes the fun part! Start arranging the potato slices on the dough. Any way you like is fine - I like to start with an outside ring and work my way in, making sure to cover the whole surface with potatoes! Lastly, sprinkle the potato pizza with the cheeses and pop it into a 400 degree oven for 20-25 minutes or until the cheese is melty and the bottom of the crust is golden brown. Then,, prepare to fall in love with pizza all over again!

    Stuffed Calzone Recipe

This calzone recipe is really just pizza dough folded over and stuffed with a variety of tasty ingredients. Originating in Naples, this word literally translates as "trouser leg" - named as such because it resembles the puffy pant legs that Neopolitan men used to wear a very long time ago. Outerwear never tasted so good!

    Serves 4

    Ingredients

  • 1 recipe Pizza Dough, risen once (or 1 store-bought pizza dough)
  • 1 1/2 cups ricotta cheese
  • 5 medium plum tomatoes, diced
  • 6-8 leaves fresh basil, torn into pieces
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (or fresh mozzarella cheese, cubed)
  • 4 tbsp freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 3 tsp garlic powder
  • salt and black pepper
  • olive oil

Preheat the oven to 475ºF. Punch the dough down and kneed it lightly. Divide it into 4 balls.

Using a rolling pin dusted with flour, roll each abll into a flat circle about 1/4 inch thick.

In a medium bowl, combine all of the filling ingredients and mix. Season with salt and pepper.

Spoon the filling onto one half of each of the circles (leaving a 1 inch border along the edge).

Fold the dough over the filling and pinch the edges together with your fingers to form a seal.

Put the calzoni on a sprayed or oiled baking sheet or pan. Brush the top with olive oil and season (if you like) with a dusting of garlic powder. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the edges are golden brown and the calzoni are puffy. Enjoy!

    Basic Focaccia Recipe

A typical focaccia recipe is just a flat bread that can be served plain or with additional toppings. It is usually baked in a square form, and can be sliced in half to make a wonderful alternative to regular sandwich bread!

    Serves 4-8

    Ingredients

  • 1 recipe Pizza Dough (or store-bought dough), risen once
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or cooking spray
  • course sea salt

Brush a large square baking pan with 1 tbsp of olive oil or cooking spray. After you have punched the dough down, knead it for 3-4 minutes (this step is not necessary for store-bought dough).

Place the dough in the pan and press down into an even layer about 1 inch thick using your fingers. Cover the dough with a cloth and let rise in a warm place for 30 minutes.

    Preheat the oven to 400ºF.

Before baking, use your index and middle fingers to press rows of indentations across the surface of the dough.

Brush the dough with olive oil, and sprinkle with the salt. Bake for 25 minutes or until golden. Remove from heat.

Cut into wedges and serve as a side dish, or slice squares in half width-wise and create a tasty Mediterranean inspired sandwich for your guests!
